State & Magazine St. Update

Board Members of the Upper Hurstville Residents Association (UHRA) have been in contact with Chip Lavigne, President of Lavigne Baker Petroleum who own two of the three lots that make up the gas station site on Magazine and State (the former Shell station). From those conversations we have learned the following about the construction at the old Shell Station

  • Per the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) the old underground tanks must be removed once a station is out of service
  • Prior to moving forward with any new development the LDEQ is required to assess and evaluate the site for any additional remediation or environmental concerns. This process can take anywhere from a few months to over a year.
  • Subject to demolition permitting (which has not been approved yet) the building will be demolished
  • The owner of two of the three lots is interested in redevelopment but no firm plans for what will be developed are in motion at this time.

We have not contacted the owner of the third lot that faces State St.

The UHRA will be keeping a close eye on this site as we move forward and will do our best to keep the neighborhood informed of progress.

Thank you,

UHRA
