13 Nov 2016 UH Annual Newsletter
Dear Upper Hurstville (UH) Members:
I hope this letter finds you and your family well. As we look forward to the 2016 Holiday Season, I wanted to let you know about a few things from the Upper Hurstville (UH) Board.
UH Email Conversation
As you may notice, our emails have a new look! We have converted our neighborhood Email Blast System to a new provider in hopes of eliminating our recent issues of dropped addresses and blocked emails. Please email info@upperhurstille.com your feedback on the new look as well as any topics you would like to see included in the email blasts.

We are happy to announce the re-launch of the UH website. As we continue to work to improve communication among neighbors, we hope that you will find this a resourceful tool for the latest neighborhood happenings. Go to www.upperhurtsville.com and let us know what you think.
UH Patrols & Safety
Based on reports, comments, and feedback from both the NOPP and NOPD patrols, criminal activity in UH is low and primarily consists of crimes such as auto burglary and rummaging through unlocked cars. While we are fortunate to live in such a relatively safe neighborhood, we still live in a city and therefore need to remain vigilant about our safety. Please remember to follow these simple safety tips
- Keep your property and street area well lit
- Avoid large shrubs that can serve as hiding spots
- Lock your cars
- Be aware of your surroundings
- Call the UHSD Patrol line for
- Escorts to your front door
- Property checks when you suspect suspicious activity
- Mail pickup when you are out of town
Short Term Rentals Update
Short Term Rental (STR) legislation is currently under consideration by the city council. There is much back and forth on what will be allowed and not allowed with regard to STR in our neighborhood. One of the latest proposals is that “temporary rentals” be redefined to include whole house non-owner occupied STR for 90 to 120 days per year (days are being negotiated). The majority of the council seems to believe they must provide significant opportunity for STR to be allowed in order to gain cooperation of the listing companies and enable effective enforcement. In practice this has not panned out in other cities where enforcement remains an issue and cooperation from listing companies is inconsistent.
If you have concerns about non-owner occupied short term rentals occurring next to you make your feelings known to our entire city council and Mayors office. Click the links to see the UH Letter to the Honorable Susan Guidry regarding the neighborhood stance on STR and the corresponding attachments.
UH Directory
The September 2016 release of the Upper Hurstville Directory has received great feedback. If you have not received your PDF of the UH Directory, email info@upperhurstville.com your name and address to submit your request. Please be aware the Directory may only be distributed to addresses within UH boundaries and printed copies are no longer available.
Now that we have moved to an electronic format we are able to update the Directory more frequently. In preparation for an early 2017 update please provide any edits, changes, and/or additions you may have found missing from the 2016 September Update. All comments may be sent to info@upperhurstville.com.
